Smoothies for Health
For my birthday in Dec I received a Nutri Ninja – it is like a tornado machine! I must say, it makes smoothies lots of fun! (It is pretty loud, but worth it!)
This is why I’m trying smoothies in lieu of juicing (which I still love). The point of smoothies (and juicing for that matter), for me is to get extra nutrients into my daily intake. I like veggie centered concoctions- though, I must admit, I do use fruits in my smoothies whereas when I juice, I just like the vegetables. Because of the consistency, for me a banana, berries, an apple or a pear is needed to help naturally sweeten up the drink.
My Recipe?
I almost always start with kale (packed with vitamins A, C and K as well as minerals like copper, potassium, iron, manganese and phosphorus)- but you can use any leafy green – add a veggie (beets maybe? a colossal punch with potassium, magnesium, fiber, phosphorus, iron; vitamins A, B & C; beta-carotene, beta-cyanine; folic acid and more!), fruit (frozen berries or banana?), some liquid (sometimes almond milk, perhaps coconut water, pear juice or just water) and chunks of ice (optional). I also add ground flax seed for the omega 3’s and sometimes protein powder.
There are a million recipes out there. Try some out and don’t be afraid to create your own!
